In the ever-evolving world of fitness, trends come and go, but one that's currently enjoying the global spotlight is Pilates. What started as a niche exercise regime focusing on rehabilitation has now become a household name, attracting celebrities, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts alike.

Recent research (Feb 2024) from PureGym has looked at every country's favourite exercise based on the Google search volumes for over 200 types of exercise. Pilates was the favourite for 40 countries (second only to dance in 51 countries). The survey lists Pilates as the number one fitness trend for 2024 and proves that Joseph Pilates’ exercise regime, which began in New York in the late 1920s, has truly crossed the world.

Why has Pilates risen to become such a powerful global fitness trend? Let’s explore the reasons behind its meteoric rise and more importantly – why it’s not a trend that’s going away - it’s definitely here to stay!

It integrates core strength, flexibility, balance, and posture, making it more than just a workout. Pilates is often recommended by Physiotherapists and Doctors to patients recovering from injury, and those with medical conditions an example of is Arthritis as stronger muscles around the joints will help to support the joint more effectively.

Pilates has been endorsed by high-profile names like Meghan Markle, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate Hudson, contributing to its visibility. This is one of the things that brought me to Pilates personally – as I have a heart problem that is exacerbated by high impact exercise, Pilates is the absolute perfect exercise for me.

Many of my clients who hated other forms of exercise (and would never step into a gym) have fallen in love with Pilates, and said that this is the only exercise they have ever done that they look forward to. This makes me so happy as I think they will continue to practice in the long term and give themselves the best chance of moving well longer into later life.
